Mia, That Deaf Zinester
Mia is a Deaf artist teaching practical ASL (American Sign Language) untraditionally.
Tired of memorizing vocab but still feeling lost when it’s time to actually sign? Yeah, I’ve seen that a lot.
Watching non-signers get overwhelmed trying to piece together conversations made me want to offer something different. I started making zines with practical communication tips—and now I offer one-on-one sign language sessions over Zoom that focus more on real connection than perfect grammar.
No rigid structure. No pressure to “get it right.” Just signing, learning, and unlearning at your pace.
Here’s what sessions are like:
Low-pressure — come as you are, no judgment.
Practical signing — not textbook drills, but stuff that actually works in conversation.
Your call — bring topics, questions, whatever’s on your mind.
Welcoming to all — LGBTQIA+ friendly, neurodivergent-friendly, always.
Beginner-friendly — I’ll slow down, repeat, or type if needed.
Open space — want to talk about Deaf culture? Family history? The challenges we've had to endure? Signing in specific settings? Go for it.
This isn’t a lesson. It’s a conversation. Let’s sign, build real skills, and dismantle audism while we’re at it.
